The Rise Of Afrobeats Superstar Wizkid

Upbringing and Early Career

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, also known as Wizkid, is an internationally-known musician from Nigeria. He was born in summer of 1990. Through the influence of his family’s church background, Ayodeji and his friends created the Glorious Five at age 15. Although the group was short-lived, they released one album and performed several shows together. By 2010, Balogun had officially adopted the stage moniker Wizkid and began working on his studio album: Superstar. The album’s first single was Holla at Your Boy; released on January 2, 2010. The song was well received and increased Wizkid’s notoriety on an international level. Superstar’s second and third singles would further increase popularity for the rising Afrobeats musician. After his debut effort receiving accolades such as album of the year and best breakout album, Wizkid began working on a compilation album with Empire Mates State of Mind. Once the album’s three month tour concluded, the Nigerian singer began creating his second studio album.

Second Studio Album and International Stardom

The lead single for Ayo was Jaiye Jaiye. It features grammy-nominated Afrobeats singer Femi Kuti. Critics and fans both praised this introduction to his second album. During an interview, Wizkid states he didn’t want to be a musician known for only materialistic lyrics. This was an influencing factor on his choice of features and singles for Ayo. Within one year of the album’s release, WizKid had grown to superstar status. He was now a frequent collaborator with stars such as Rihanna, Chris Brown, and Akon. For two years following the release of Ayo, he would tour internationally and make guest appearances on numerous songs. To find out about his latest drops, click on WizKid latest song.
